Day 1

7.30pm, in the Big Tent (actually it is Stewart’s tent, and it is very small with lots of holes). Having trouble keeping my eyes open, but it has been a good day, tiring but fulfilling.

Big Events:

  • We met a nice Gold group from Wales, at Nun Cross, doing an exploration. They were not too impressed at having to spend the night at a place with no toilet and only a stream for water, which happened to be in the middle of nowhere. (They would have been pleased to find that because of the mad gunman, they would be moved to a different campsite.)
  • Good start to the day when we bumped into the army, doing training, not that fun as we could have been shot at, one man actually had his gun ready, luckily for us, another man went and told him we were approaching.
  • Having wondered why we kept seeing a police helicopter in the afternoon, we were soon to discover further ground policemen and learn that there was a gunman on the loose. Scary, yet somehow quite exciting, also relieved to find that the helicopter was not on the search for us.
  • While walking over to Nun’s Cross-Farm did our own little exploration and discovered a frog and a snake (from then on were careful where we trod!!!)

    Weather:

Changeable- very annoying as would not make up its mind. Sun, drizzle, rain, cloud, wind. Got very hot and sweaty in the lovely blue waterproofs.

    Route:

Some long up hill legs, got lost a few times, but no major problems, always found the right way again. Nice first leg went straight through a bog- great start!!!!

    Aim:

Tin Mines-lots of them, very interesting (piles of rock!!!) Most of them looked the same, but have lots of photos. Also saw lots of huts and old settlements. What was quite interesting was what we think was a channalised river near Nun’s Cross-farm.

    General:

Mixed opinions on the beanfeast, washing up in the field was hard (Izzy coped very well). Everyone found their bags very heavy.

    Day 2

4.30pm in Nicky and Gemma’s tent (slightly bigger than Stewart’s, but more full of stuff)- most importantly it is dry. Pretty good day, nice and short.

    Big Events:

  • Proved Mike wrong by successfully navigating the group through this wood.

    Weather:

Appalling, very wet, everything got soaked. Now in camp, but very, very windy, not blown away yet.

    Route:

Very exposed in places. One very nice hill and tor to climb. Did not get lost, changed the route a bit, which involved some interesting stepping stones.

    Aim:

    Human Influences:

  • Timber Yard- logging
  • Farms
  • Campsites
  • Hamlets

    General:

Glad we finished early to seek shelter in the tent. Looking forward to the last day and going home.

    Day 3

At freshers fair getting D of E stall ready for new lower sixth. Writing now as was too tired yestersday.

    Big Events:

  • Getting lost on King Tor, ending up ½ hour behind after walking round it rather than over it.

    Weather:

Very bad, rained most of the day.

    Route:

Fairly easy, once on the path, had a problem finding it. Getting lost on the moor was quite scary. Spirits kept high with singing along to musicals and Disney.

    Aim:

    Human Influences:

  • Grimspound
  • Hamlets
  • Farming
  • Logging/ replanting
