Of course it's raining again (drizzling actually), but hey, for the first time in a long while we have three days of forecast sun, with smooth seas and force 3 winds - can't get much better really.
So today has been declared a sight seeing day, just not sure of whether to take the steam train to Dartmouth, or to just go shopping in Brixham and nearby Torquay (ferry ride away). Yesterday was overcast with patches of sunshine, and at one stage some pretty heavy fog. I did my bit to chase it away by sitting up at the bow with a fog horn (manual, you have to blow), giving one long every two minutes. Otherwise we had a pretty good, if light wind, and a smooth sea but with a large swell. We left Falmouth at 05:30 after a very quick "drop and go" type of casting off. Then out on a course to Eddystone Lighthouse and then Prawle Point, Start Point, Berry Point and finally Brixham.
We roared along with the tide until about three hours after Eddystone (about the same time as the fog), when the ebb tide knocked us back to about 2 knots SOG. We saw our friends, the basking sharks which we first saw when we came down to Plymouth in 1999. Pretty much in the same place too. Also spotted were seals, and a few groups of porpoises.
Tomorrows plan is to go to Weymouth. Just not sure how to plan it with hight tides at about 09:00. We want to go on a low so that we can get a push there, which will be about 15:00, but it is an 8 hour trip, which gets us there at 23:00, too late for the last bridge lift. Maybe Poole after all, or battle it out with the Spring tides again - or leave at 03:00 which doesn't sound very appealing.
After that, Southampton, Winchester, TV, hot baths, clean clothes, fast internet access all await us...
