Global Challenge 2004
Countdown to the Start Gun (14:00 on 3rd October 2004)
This is big boat racing for all on the largest stage there is…. For the crews, of course, but also, through the latest communications technology, for a wide audience ashore. Created by legendary yachtsman Sir Chay Blyth in 1988, inspired by his personal experience as the first solo yachtsman to sail "the wrong way" around the world, the ten month race will cover 32,000 miles, from Europe to the Americas to Australasia, from Africa back to Europe. Embracing the extreme conditions of the world's oceans - from the unpredictable calm of the doldrums to the huge seas, icebergs and gale force winds of the Southern Ocean - the race is an extraordinary test of personality and human endeavour - pushing everyone to the limit. Three fundamental ingredients together make Challenge Business' Global Challenge races unique: All amateur crew - these are not yacht races for professionals. Challenge Business seeks adventurers who are ready to be pushed to the limit and come out winners. Sailing skills are taught initially and honed on the races themselves. One design fleet - All the yachts are exactly the same and have exactly the same equipment on board. The Global Challenge races are pure races: there is no advantage gained from different equipment. The winners are the crews who sail well most consistently. The 'wrong' way round the world - the earths prevailing winds and currents move from west to east. The old grain traders ran before them voyaging from Europe to Australia and back - sailing from west to east. To sail against the prevailing winds and currents is like running uphill as opposed to running down hill. It's tough! But it is a Challenge of a Lifetime, and one to take up for he or she who dares.
